One of the most common questions we receive from clients is: "How much recycled content should be in my cups?" RPET is not an "all or nothing" proposition. We can manufacture cups with varying percentages of recycled material blended with virgin resin. The choice between 30%, 50%, or 100% RPET depends on your specific goals regarding budget, aesthetics, regulatory compliance, and marketing impact.
The 30% Blend: The Regulatory Minimum
In many regions, particularly the UK and parts of the EU, 30% recycled content is the magic number.
The Driver: Legislation such as the UK Plastic Packaging Tax applies to any packaging with less than 30% recycled material.
The Benefit: By choosing a 30% blend (30% rPET / 70% Virgin PET), you meet the legal threshold to avoid taxes while keeping costs relatively low.
Appearance: At 30%, the cup is virtually identical to a virgin cup. There is zero difference in color or clarity. This is the "safe" entry point for brands wanting to be compliant without making a massive leap.
The 50% Blend: The Balanced Choice
The Driver: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals often aim higher than the bare legal minimum.
The Benefit: A 50/50 blend strikes a balance between impact and cost. It allows you to claim that "Half of this cup is made from recycled bottles," which is a strong marketing message. It creates a significant reduction in your virgin plastic footprint without carrying the full price premium of 100% rPET (as high-quality rPET can sometimes be more expensive than virgin resin due to processing costs).
The 100% Blend: The Ultimate Sustainability Statement
The Driver: Maximum environmental impact and brand leadership.
The Benefit: This is for brands that want to be leaders in sustainability. A 100% rPET cup creates a completely closed loop—no new fossil fuels were extracted to make it. It offers the maximum carbon footprint reduction (up to 79%).
The Reality: While 100% rPET technology has improved massively, there can occasionally be a very subtle tint (a slight grey or blue hue) compared to pristine virgin plastic, depending on the source of the bottles. However, many eco-conscious consumers view this slight tint as a badge of honor—proof that the cup is truly recycled. It is a powerful differentiator on the shelf.
Flexibility in Manufacturing
Our manufacturing process is flexible. We mix the resin pellets in-house just before extrusion. This means we can tailor the percentage to your exact needs. If a new law in your country mandates 25%, we can do 25%. If your marketing team wants 100%, we can do 100%. We advise our clients to look at their local tax laws and their customer demographics to find the "sweet spot" percentage that maximizes ROI while minimizing environmental impact.
